Lonneke S. Timmermans

Lonneke Timmermans is a renowned Dutch lawyer in family law, divorce mediator, and collaborative divorce lawyer. She mostly assists successful entrepreneurs and high-net-worth individuals in complex divorce proceedings. Lonneke is a recognised expert when it comes to settling prenuptial agreements, non-marital relationships, and maintenance cases. She regularly litigates in relocation cases and cases related to Section 160 of Book 10 of the Dutch Civil Code. Her drive in getting her clients to divorce their partners in as harmonious a manner as possible – achieved through consultation, mediation, and collaboration – has prevented many cases from ending up in court and divorces becoming mired in acrimony. Lonneke is also an estate mediator. With inheritance law specialist Petra Knoppers, she acts as a mediator (or co-mediator) in cases involving demises.

Lonneke completed her Dutch law degree at Tilburg University in 1999, after which she worked as the senior judicial assistant in the ’s Hertogenbosch and Amsterdam District Courts. In 2001, Lonneke started working in the legal profession, first at Rassers Advocaten in Breda, where she specialised entirely in personal and family law. She then moved to AKD Prinsen Van Wijmen, where she worked in the Personal and Family Law section before joining SmeetsGijbels in 2007. Lonneke set up SmeetsGijbels’ Amsterdam office in 2009. She has been a SmeetsGijbels partner/shareholder since 1 July 2011.

Lonneke is a member of the ‘Nederlandse vereniging Familie- en erfrecht Advocaten Scheidingsmediators’ (vFAS), of which association she has been a board member for four years. Additionally, Lonneke is a member of the Association of Collaborative Professionals (VvCP) and has been added to the register of the ‘Stichting Nalatenschapsmediation’ foundation. She is also a member of the editorial team of the ‘Relatierecht en Praktijk’ (REP) trade journal. Lonneke writes for various publications on family law topics and regularly appears as an expert on television and radio. As well as giving courses on her field to lawyers, Lonneke also delivers lectures to accountants and tax advisers. Lonneke is a member of the Founders Carbon Network (FCN).

Lonneke Timmermans has a listing in the Netherlands Bar register for the following principal and secondary fields of law:

  • Law of persons and family law (collaborative divorce, divorce, maintenance cases, contact arrangements, mediation, parenthood, and recognition)

A condition of her registration is that, every calendar year, she is required to obtain ten study credits for each of the main fields of law for which she is listed, in accordance with the standards of the Netherlands Bar.
