Wendy A. van der Stroom-Willemsen

Wendy van der Stroom-Willemsen is an internationally renowned Dutch lawyer and mediator in family law at SmeetsGijbels. She specialises in complex divorce cases, including many that involve children and regularly takes on cases with an international character. This sees her supporting many Dutch citizens abroad and many expats who reside in the Netherlands. Wendy is regarded by many as an authority on cross-border mediations and on international cases involving children, including cases of abduction. It is her view that children should never be used as pawns.

Wendy graduated from Erasmus University Rotterdam in 1990, and after having received training of a general nature has worked only in the field of personal and family law. She first worked at the offices of AKD Prinsen van Wijmen, before going on to form part of the Private Clients department at the renowned firm of NautaDutilh. As a partner and founder of SmeetsGijbels, she has been associated with the firm from its very beginning.

In addition to her legal practice, Wendy has given multiple workshops and courses, including in the field of prenuptial agreements and the calculation of maintenance. She also has a teaching role with the study programme run by the Netherlands Bar for newly-qualified lawyers in the area of family law.

Wendy is a member of the ‘Nederlandse vereniging van Familie- en erfrecht Advocaten Scheidingsmediators’ (vFAS). She is the chair of the Association of International Child Abduction Lawyers in the Netherlands and a board member of the ‘Stichting Steunfonds Jeugdbescherming Rotterdam’ foundation. She is a former member of the Board of Directors of the ‘Internationaal Juridisch Instituut’ (IJI) in The Hague and also took part in the court consultations in the family unit in the Rotterdam judicial district. For many years, she has been a volunteer for VoorleesExpress and president of her service club. Wendy is a member of the Reunite organisation and has also been involved with legislation advisory committees on such matters as parentage and international child abduction. She is a fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers (IAFL), a worldwide network of lawyers specialising in family law.

Wendy van der Stroom-Willemsen has a listing in the Netherlands Bar register for the following principal and secondary fields of law:

  • Personal and family law (divorce, maintenance, visitation rights, international private law, international child abduction, child protection law, mediation, parentage, and legitimation)

A condition of her registration is that, every calendar year, she is required to obtain ten study credits for each of the main fields of law for which she is listed, in accordance with the standards of the Netherlands Bar.
